Headmaster Georg Latzke
The BRG Wien 19 is situated in the outskirts of Vienna. The school is comparatively small, only about 660 students and 60 teachers. The curriculum is that of a gymnasium centered on the sciences, but in recent years more and more emphasis has been put on foreign languages and innovative teaching methods have been introduced.

The BRG Wien 19 was one of the first schools in Austria to implement the bilingual system (tuition in both, English and German) as well as a modular system in the upper forms.

Internationalization has always been in the focus of teaching activities. The BRG 19 joined the network EDUCATION WITHOUT BORDERS  in 1996 and only two years later it became a  UNESCO associated school, a member of  ASP, the ASSOCIATED SCHOOLS PROJECT.

The BRG Wien 19, Krottenbachstraße is run as a grammar school (“Realgymnasium”) according to the Austrian curriculum, with an emphasis on natural sciences. Alongside this, we recognise that an all-round education is essential, so languages and humanities also play an important role.

The staff teaches using the most modern methods. Personal development and the willingness to use new techniques are fundamental to working in education. We currently have 28 classes with 658 pupils and 65 teachers..

Bilingual lessons, independent learning, project work, creative workshops, social projects, the promotion of health awareness and working together with the wider school community have all become central to the way we see ourselves as a school.
For some years now, a particular point of importance for us has been the internationalisation of our school. As well as international contacts in the form of exchange visits and trips abroad, we are also the Austrian representative in the Education Without Borders network.

Our international activities

In 2003, the BRG Wien19 took over the presidency of the Education Without Borders network. Under the auspices of the Austrian UNESCO Commission, we staged an international project week, from 25th September to 1st October, with the name

The main aims and events of the week’s programme were:
- Intensive language workshops
(especially with less internationally widespread languages)
- A UNESCO awareness day – World Heritage
(Schönbrunn, Vienna city centre)
- A cultural framework - Vienna as a city of culture
- A free-time and entertainment programme for our European guests

120 school pupils aged 16-17, as well as 40 teachers and headteachers from 15 European countries took part in the meeting. The aim was to create and strengthen the awareness of a common European identity through the discussion of various European languages and cultures.
This project week was one of the biggest events ever to have been organised by a Viennese grammar school.
